|

Blue car with major front end damage after a car accident. When certain accidents take place on West Virginia roadways, we might ask ourselves, “How could this accident have been prevented?” Car accidents happen for many reasons on our roadways, some of which are more serious than others. In many of these accidents, especially those that involve multiple drivers, there is always a chance that the accident could have been prevented if special precautions were taken. Today, we want to look at some of the common-sense ways that accidents can be prevented.

Preventing Accidents in West Virginia

Here are some of the ways that we can work to prevent some of the worst injuries on our roads, highlighting some of the biggest reasons why these accidents take place:

Proper Training for Teens: Because teen drivers are involved in a large percentage of our accidents every year, it is important to understand how we can keep our teen drivers safe on our roadways. Many of these accidents take place due to a lack of maturity, skills, or knowledge. It is important to help a teenager build those skills as they venture out onto our roads and ensure that they are always practicing.

Wear a Seatbelt: Always get into the habit of wearing a seatbelt. Without one, you could be seriously injured or even ejected from your vehicle, which means that your accident could end in fatal results. Preventative measures are the best way to ensure your health and safety are a top priority.

Never Mixing Drinking and Drugs with Driving: Drinking and drugged driving can produce a chemical effect on your brain that impairs your judgment and reaction time. You could very easily cause a fatal accident in the blink of an eye, which is why it is important to always drive sober, no matter what.

Limiting Passenger Distractions: Passengers are distracting. In fact, according to research, the risk of a fatal crash increases with each additional passenger you invite into your vehicle. This is why it is important to limit the amount of distracting passengers you have in your vehicle to drive safely at all times.

Never Speeding: Speeding is one of the main causes of injuries and fatalities on our roads. Being involved in an accident that involves speeding will increase the likelihood that your accident will lead to more damages and will be injurious in nature. This is especially true in accidents where many people are involved such as on our highways.

Avoiding Bad Weather Situations: Driving in bad weather can increase the likelihood that you will also become involved in a serious accident. It is a bad idea to head out in conditions that you know could easily lead to an accident, such as on snowy or icy roads, especially when you do not have the proper tires to handle these conditions.

Avoiding Cell Phone Use: Texting and driving and speaking on the phone while driving is one of the lead contributors to serious accidents every year in West Virginia. This is why it is important to always put your phone away unless there is a life-threatening emergency. Always pull over onto the side of the road if you have to answer an important text or call.
